We’ve used one of the training sessions of John and Millie to show how target training can quickly and easily be used to get your dog performing simple tricks in a way which is enjoyable for both you and your dog. Whilst out on walks with Millie, John noticed she has a natural ability to stand on her hind legs. She does this to get a better look at animals that are at a distance from her. She regularly stands on her hind legs as she emerges from a local plantation and comes onto the footpath. One day as she started to raise herself onto her hind legs John said “Up” and gave her a click and a treat, he repeated this by holding a treat just above her nose, raising the treat and saying “Up” followed by a click and treat, thus reinforcing the command and behaviour. By the end of the day Millie was standing on her hind legs by use of the command and the hand action. |
